The African-American Strengthening
Families Program
Rural African-American SFP
Toyan was a single African-America mother living in
a housing project in the rural South with her three children.
She was one of a group of mothers who had decreased their
drug abuse without treatment after participating in the
Strengthening Families Program at the local mental health
center. I came to visit her to find out how this amazing
outcome happened. She said: "I just felt better about
being a mother, my kids were not driving me crazy and doing
better in school. My life was on a roll, so I decided to
take the big step and stop the drinking and drugging."

The Safehaven Program: SFP
for Urban African-American Families
Malcolm was a cocaine addict in treatment in inner-city
Detroit. He had attended the Strengthening Families Program
for 12 weeks before this wife was convinced by her sister
that he really was serious about being a good father and
let his three children come to the program. I was in tears
that night when the van brought the children to the church
and three happy children ran into his open arms. They then
completed the next group of the family program and he was
reunited with his family on completion of treatment.

The Hispanic Strengthening
Families Program
Maria lives in a housing project in Denver
where the Strengthening Families Program is being run in
Spanish. She loves the program because it is just in the
next building, dinner is provided, and the kids enjoy all
the activities. The trainers tell her that she still needs
to be the parent in make the decisions, rather than her
children trying to run the family.

The Strengthening Hawaiian
Families Program
Lana, a Hawaiian single mother, signed up for
the Strengthening Hawaii's Families Program at her school.
She was concerned that her three elementary school children
were becoming too aggressive like the dad, she divorced
because of physically abusive behaviors towards her and
them. The program increased her confidence as a parent and
reduced the kids acting out and defiance. As a family, they
enjoyed the luau and the graduation party on the beach. Read

The Strengthening Families
Program for 10-14 Year Olds
The Swenson family lives on a farm in southern
Iowa. Their junior high school was offering this family
program at night in the winter. It meant packing up all
three kids and driving 50 miles back to the school at night
often in the snow, but they attended all of the seven sessions.
"With all the methamphetamine around, I didn't want
my kids becoming users. I also have a much better idea now
how to help my children to achieve their dreams and goals–and
it isn't for them to become a meth user or dealer!."
